"Mr President, it is a pleasure to speak now and I want to talk about a measure that is very important to farmers in Ireland. Last week Mr Jim Nicholson and I met producers north and south of the border in Ireland, and it seems that there are lots of practices which they are unhappy with, particularly at the hands of meat processors and retailers. We have traceability from farm to fork, but, as part of a quality assurance scheme, farmers in Ireland cannot move cattle more than four times or they will not benefit, and the last movement has to be more than 30 days before slaughter. We feel this is discriminatory.
Also, compared with the United Kingdom, farmers in Ireland will be getting EUR 200 to 300 less per animal, while the consumer buying the meat on the shelves in the United Kingdom is paying the same price. We want this examined under competition law and the functioning of the Single Market."@en1
