"Mr President, I should like to congratulate the rapporteurs. This package of measures is crucially important for the European Union farming sector. It is essential that we create legislation that is simple, flexible and outcomes-based. I am a little alarmed that aspects falling outside the scope of the regulation, such as cloning and animal transportation times, have been included and that these may distract from the primary animal health concerns.
The movement of animals between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland is vital to the agricultural industry on both sides of that border. It is extremely important for on-going trade that the proposed EU Animal Health Regulation is not so prescriptive as to destroy generations of successful trade between two Member States. Veterinary practice agrees that distinct animal health preoccupations exist between Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland and the mainland. Existing animal health and welfare strategies between the jurisdictions must not be undermined by this regulation. To conclude I would also like to mention the matter of bovine EID. Can the Commission confirm that the recently adopted bovine EID regulation will be incorporated without change in the animal health regulations? I would support this inclusion."@en1
