"Mr President, Ireland – North and South – has agriculture at the heart of its economy. Our animal health strategy is very important, and Ireland as a whole should be declared brucellosis-free by next year. We have an all-Ireland animal health strategy with the objective of allowing the free movement of animals throughout Ireland. This needs to be recognised by Europe, and the partition of Ireland should not be used as a barrier to trade, as this currently leads to meat factory buyers in Ireland engaging in anticompetitive practices. The new EU animal health law, which is due to be agreed in 2015, must recognise Ireland as one island and remove these barriers to animal movement and trade. Furthermore, the revision of official control regulations puts food and food safety back on the table, potentially ensuring that risks are eliminated. After all, we cannot allow another horsemeat scandal to happen."@en1
