"Mr President, I think there must be an election coming. I would just like to begin by saying that we strongly support the changes to cab design to see better protection for cyclists and for pedestrians. That is a strong Conservative position, and we were very happy to have these in the report when it was voted on in the Committee on Transport and Tourism.
But there is a key issue for the Conservative MEPs about the possible limitations that could be placed on British and Irish hauliers in terms of the height of vehicles, and we need to address that. We are also concerned that the current text, which is calling for the Commission to provide a review by 2016 on the issue of cross-border use, is really too premature. Longer trucks have been used in countries such as Sweden, Finland, Holland and Germany for a number of years. Whilst we certainly do not agree with the introduction of these so-called 60-tonne mega-trucks on British roads, I believe that those Member States involved who wish to introduce them have the right to do so. If they have a bilateral agreement, that is fine. We support the subsidiarity principle.
