"Mr President, the recent peak of air pollution in the West Midlands in the United Kingdom has shown that much more needs to be done to tackle air pollution. We need cleaner cars on our streets. However, electric vehicles need the infrastructure whereas, of course, investment in charging points requires some guarantee that the market of electric cars will expand. So it is truly a chicken and egg situation. That is why the European strategy which sets objectives for Member States in terms of charging points is crucial. It would give the right signal to car manufacturers that we are encouraging the use of low-carbon vehicles and that their investments are worth making. And it would give the right signal to European citizens that we take the issues of air pollution and climate change seriously."@en1
