"It is a sad reflection on this Parliament that I feel I must stress the fight against red tape as much as the fight against fraud in assessing this Report. In my constituency, Northern Ireland, the border counties and the local economy have been ravaged by the prevalence of illegal fuel laundering and illicit trading of cigarettes and other goods. Much of this crime has come at the hands of Republican terrorists operating in these areas. And what is the EU’s response? To propose a European Public Prosecutor’s Office; to harmonise criminal law systems; and to create a team of EU customs officials to duplicate roles already carried out by national authorities.
This is disgraceful. We do not need more European red tape and quangos to impede domestic criminal and judicial processes. This simply attacks national sovereignty. Instead, we need better enforcement of powers that are already in place. In Northern Ireland, a region of the United Kingdom, we continue to witness Sinn Féin and the SDLP refusing to allow the National Crime Agency to operate across the Province. And one must question, very deeply, their motives. Ultimately, rather than promoting further harmonisation of policing, investigative powers and legal systems, Parliament must better support Member States in their efforts to tackle corruption and organised crime."@en1
