"I voted to support this sensible approach to bovine EID. Given the significant problems faced by farmers in the sheep sector due to EID labelling, the option for voluntary EID tagging for Member States for the first five years is welcome and gives the sector time to prepare. I previously questioned the Commission on the negative experience of farmers concerning the impact of the EID on the health and welfare of sheep. It is reported that the incidence of welfare problems and infection caused by EID tags can be anything up to 50%, with serious animal welfare implications that are contrary to all good farming practice. Despite concerns raised by MEPs at the time the Commission went ahead with sheep EID. Hopefully lessons have been learned from this mistake and Member States take the flexibility given under this bovine EID regulation to work with farmers to effectively utilise the five-year transition period. I fully support the deletion of voluntary labelling requirements and bureaucratic burden. Food safety is a priority and we must work with farmers to ensure that the system is practical and delivers the optimum level of food safety without any unnecessary bureaucracy."@en1
