"As an MEP for Northern Ireland, a region of the UK that lies on the periphery of Europe, I welcome the focus of these proposals toward shaping telecoms in a manner that encourages cross-border trade and travel. In the Council’s Working Group, representatives of the United Kingdom have put forward suggestions to simplify and streamline the provisions contained in the proposal. My constituency shares a land border with the Republic of Ireland. The mobility of persons, goods and services is therefore crucial to creating growth in the local economy. Since 2008, the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment has invested over GBP 45 million in broadband services, including GBP 21 million in rural areas. This investment in our digital infrastructure is central to driving our economy. Provisions included within this package would move toward the abolition of roaming charges. This would have inherent benefits for those living in the border counties of my constituency. The package would also include greater consumer protection measures, promoting increased transparency in contracts, and allowing for a more open internet. If implemented simply and effectively, these measures stand to encourage greater uptake of online services, including e-procurement and e-health, among businesses and consumers. This can only be positive for our economy and for society as a whole."@en1
