"From hip implants to pacemakers and breast implants, consumers use medical devices on a day-to-day basis and these products most often contribute significantly to people’s health and well-being. Medical devices make hearts beat and allow people to walk and, if not of a high quality, they could jeopardise consumers’ lives. Therefore, it is only right that there is a regulatory framework in place that guarantees that these products are safe and effective. This is about balancing patient safety, which should be the first priority, with swift access to the EU market and innovation by medical device companies. Patient safety should always be a priority and that is why I voted in favour of this opportunity to enhance patient care and safety and ensure the highest standards of medical devices."@en1
