"The proposals to reduce the sound level of motor vehicles passed will undoubtedly ensure a higher level of health and environmental protection. Research by the European Environment Agency has shown that the persistent exposure to high levels of traffic noise, whether through a daily commute to work or living beside a busy high street, can prove physically and mentally draining, even contributing to cardiovascular and other diseases. The proposals will increase transparency for customers purchasing motor vehicles, requiring Member States to provide information on noise levels at the point of sale and in technical promotional materials. In terms of vehicle safety, new hybrid and electric cars will need to install Acoustic Vehicle Alerting Systems to provide protection to blind and other vulnerable people. The most controversial aspect of the proposals is the limit values, with a long-term aim of reducing noise levels to 68 decibels eventually agreed. I consider this a classic example of European compromise which may not satisfy all parties, but it does both reduce the harmful effects of noise pollution while not causing a loss of competitiveness for the European automotive industry. I am therefore happy to endorse the proposals as they stand."@en1
