"Mr President, across the world we have seen the corporate takeover of sports. Soccer is the obvious example. It is a sport built by working-class people that has now been taken over by billionaires, like Roman[nbsp ]Abramovich and Malcolm Glazer, in many cases pricing out loyal fans and their families from being able to go to see the games. In Ireland, the same process now potentially threatens our national sports. The GAA has been built across the country by amateur players and dedicated volunteers. Rupert[nbsp ]Murdoch and Sky, fresh from scandals in Britain, have now been granted exclusive rights to show 14 GAA games this season. This will mean, for example, that thousands of families who cannot afford the luxury of Sky Sports at EUR 64 a month will be unable to watch Dublin fight to retain the Sam Maguire Cup. The Minister for Sport, Michael Ring, has said that he believes all games should be free to view, but words are cheap. We should immediately have legislation to guarantee that all televised games are available to all."@en1
