"Madam President, what is the context of this discussion? It is a context whereby the Ukrainian people are being squeezed between, on the one hand, the EU and NATO, and on the other hand, Russia. It is a fight between those for spheres of influence, for economic influence and political influence. That is a fight that I want no part in, and that is the reason I do not support the trade preferences that are an intrinsic part of that fight, together with macro-financial assistance. They are a means of legitimising a self-proclaimed government made up of reactionary oligarchs and forces of the far-right. This is all covered here with words of solidarity, but look at the reality. Look at the memorandum of understanding being negotiated by the IMF: a massive increase in gas prices; a brutal imposition of austerity; declining currency involving inflation for ordinary households; the minimum wage has been frozen; repayment of EUR[nbsp ]6[nbsp ]billion in the next two years. This is not solidarity, it is economic blackmail. Real solidarity means standing with the people against the EU, NATO and Russia and instead standing for a government of people, of workers, rather than a government of the oligarchs."@en1
