"Mr President, the last few months in Ukraine have thrown into sharp relief the contrast between that country and its former overlord, Russia. While Ukraine’s leader fell after months of daily protests, Russia has now effectively banned all forms of public dissent, as its leader, Putin, fears the prospects for opposition and democratic defeat more than anything else. It is certainly no coincidence that the Bolotnaya Square sentences were announced the very day after the end of the Sochi Olympics. It is clear that Putin’s much-vaunted prisoner amnesty was simply window dressing to convince the world of Russia’s democratic credentials.
So I join my colleagues in the ECR in condemning the harsh and disproportionate sentences handed down to the seven defendants. We call on the authorities to release them without delay. People in Russia and everywhere else must be allowed to express their views in public without fear of arrest and imprisonment, no matter how much the President, Mr Putin, may disagree with them."@en1
