"Madam President, Commissioner, this morning we all welcomed the agreement reached in London yesterday evening between the European Union, Norway and the Faroe Islands, because we want to see an end to this irresponsible fishing which has taken place. While the deal is welcome, it does have its problems. However, on the plus side, Iceland does not get any increased access to EU waters, and that is vital – from an Irish point of view – to protecting the markets for Irish fishermen. On the quota available to Irish fishermen: again, there is some good news here: it increases by over 60[nbsp ]% from the current 65[nbsp ]000 tonnes to 105[nbsp ]000 tonnes. Mackerel is a most valuable fishery resource to Ireland. But, like others, we would share the concerns on the increased share of the stock that has been given to the Faroe Islands, and the further increases set aside for Greenland, Russia and Iceland. I think this is a matter of serious concern, but it is good that there is an agreement. It does allow the European Union to look at sanctions for irresponsible fishing for non-contracting parties."@en1
