"Madam President, first of all I think it is a bit unfair to attack Commissioner Damanaki for not being here. She told the Conference of Presidents that she had to be in Thessaloniki at the international fishing capacity conference. The Conference of Presidents, if anyone, should be the ones that we attack. They could have been more flexible in scheduling this debate on a day that she would be here.
I agree with Pat the Cope Gallagher: we have now achieved a breakthrough agreement. I also think that it is overly generous to give 12.6[nbsp ]% of the TAC to the Faroes and set aside 15.6[nbsp ]% for Iceland and Russia in the hope that they will join this coastal states agreement later. The only reason we have managed to do this is because ICES tells us that the spawning stock biomass has increased dramatically and we now have a 1.2 million tonne TAC, which is double what it was four years ago. That might not be sustainable, and then we could suffer. However, in the meantime it is good news and I congratulate everyone."@en1
