"Turkey is an important strategic ally of the UK, being both a member of NATO and the G20. Its broader geo-strategic position and strong trade links with the EU further underline the need for close cooperation and engagement. Broadly I support the tone of the 2013 progress report; however, I welcome some of the more critical aspects that have been highlighted by this Parliament. The EU is built upon respect for democracy, the rule of law and human rights. It is therefore unfortunate to be able to point to some many instances in which the current Turkish Government has shown disregard for those values over the past year. Changes to the constitution; meddling with the independence of the judiciary; a large scale re-organisation of the police force following a government corruption scandal; a crackdown on media-freedom – the list is disappointingly long. As a long friend of Cyprus, I would also like to take the opportunity to note my support for renewed dialogue on this issue, and to call on the Turkish Government to engage with Cyprus’ positive stance on Famagusta, using this as a confidence-building measure to resolve the wider impasse."@en1
