"Mr President, last June, 14-year-old Berkin Elvan went out to buy bread for his mother. He never came home. He was shot in the head with a tear gas canister by police and he fell into a coma. Yesterday he became the eighth fatality of police brutality at the time of the Gezi Park protests, which I personally witnessed. Impunity still prevails for those who planned and executed that violence.
Now on the streets of Istanbul, in Ankara, in Izmir, in Bursa, in Mersin and across Turkey, the cry of hundreds of thousands rings out: Berkin Elvan is immortal! The State has responded with the same repression again. At the same time a bitter power struggle between Erdoğan and Gül continues, with neither offering any solution to the working class, the young or Kurdish people. With the ruling class divided, now is the moment to redevelop a movement from below of workers, of the poor and of young people to force Erdoğan out. A genuinely Socialist alternative must be built to the forces of reaction, of oppression and big business. Berkin Elvan Ölümsüzdür!"@en1
