"As an MEP for Northern Ireland, I am all too aware of the impact both for rises in terrorist activity and organised crime of free movement between Europe’s borders. And of course it is important that Member States therefore cooperate in order to fight and apprehend the perpetrators of these crimes. However, this report would compel national governments to give more and more information on their own criminal justice systems. It would also see the extension of the EU Justice Scoreboard to include criminal matters. I find this direction completely reprehensible. My constituency forms a part of the United Kingdom, and I believe our government at Westminster must continue to have sovereignty over the processes used to bring criminals to justice in our own land. Last year, the Home Secretary confirmed that the UK would opt out of EU policing and criminal justice measures adopted before the Lisbon Treaty came into force. I support this decision and will oppose any further attempts at harmonisation of EU justice systems."@en1
