"Mr President, there are many reasons to admire the courage and heroism of Edward Snowden. He gave us yet another reason with his testimony to the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs, during which he very bluntly, clearly and accurately stated that – despite extraordinary political pressure to do so – no Western government has been able to present evidence that such programmes are necessary. I will be equally blunt: instead of some general comments of indignation by EU leaders and Heads of State, there must be action. Shut down the mass surveillance programmes. Shut them down not only in the US, but in the EU as well. Stop the EU-US Free Trade Agreement negotiations, which, if concluded, would strike another blow to data protection rules. It is scandalous that this Parliament voted against an amendment to call on Member States to grant refugee status to Edward Snowden. He is seeking asylum in the EU. He has stated that the US will not allow EU political partners to offer political asylum to him. Unfortunately, Parliament fell for that blackmail. Pressure should be put on the Member States, including the Irish Government, to accept him."@en1
