"Madam President, a little over 12 months ago my own-initiative report on the implementation of the Single European Sky was overwhelmingly supported by this Parliament. It called on the Commission and the Member States to wake up and smell the coffee, and I therefore welcome the Commission proposal. Whilst being fully supportive of the aims of Single Sky and of Mr Sassoli’s technical report, we do have a few concerns with the Marinescu report to date. First, we cannot support the merging of existing national aviation and national supervisory authorities into a single entity. It is unnecessary and would create serious legal issues in many Member States such as the UK, where thousands of parliamentary acts during the last 40 years or so would need to be changed for no reason. Second, we are not opposed to the Performance Review Body becoming more independent, but this would need to be carefully considered and would require a full impact assessment. Finally, we come to Gibraltar, a British overseas territory which, as things stand, would be excluded. Regrettably, some Spanish colleagues have again acted in a most outrageous and provocative manner. The 2006 Córdoba Agreement was signed by all parties, and we are not prepared to stand back and see the integrity of Single Sky, and the benefits it would bring, irrevocably damaged. The disastrous effects of this childish behaviour risk stalling this complex project, which will create more than 300[nbsp ]000 highly-qualified jobs, maximise traffic flow, reduce ticket prices and – if the Greens are listening – would also save 50 million tonnes of CO and reduce fuel burn. I would ask this House to support our position tomorrow during the vote."@en1
