"Madam President, the crisis of the Turkish state grows, not least because of the extraordinary fissure which is now opening up between Prime Minister Erdoğan and Fethullah Gülen. I think that, in order to be credible, this report of Parliament must refer to that aspect of the crisis. Mr Füle speaks of serious concerns, but I have to say with great regret that I think these concerns are now so serious that Turkey has ceased to fulfil sufficiently the Copenhagen criteria.
In the autumn, a new Commission and Parliament will be obliged to consider whether the protracted and frustrating accession process is plausible and to reflect whether some alternative form of membership – short of full membership – will actually be a more suitable arrangement for both Turkey and the European Union."@en1
