"I share the Committee’s aim of highlighting the institutionalised discrimination of women and violation of basic fundamental rights in Saudi Arabia. Sadly, Saudi Arabia is at number 6 on the Open Doors World Watch List 2014, which records the top 50 countries where it is most difficult to be a Christian. There remains no provision for religious freedom, no provision for public worship or tolerance in the workplace for those of a Christian faith. As this Report rightly stresses, our approach to building relationships with Saudi Arabia must have at its core a demand for greater respect for these fundamental rights. The freedoms of expression and speech should be a precondition. The Committee also pinpoints the need for the Saudi Arabian authorities to get to grip with terrorism linked to Islamic Extremism and Al-Qaeda. It also rightly highlights the need to better protect women in that country, and to support their entry into education and the labour market. These are aspects that we as MEPs must keep at the heart of our attitude to Saudi Arabia, in order to encourage a society of tolerance both for religious minorities and women."@en1
