"The eradication of torture in the world is of paramount importance. Where human rights are seen to be violated we must work together to ensure those responsible are brought to justice. This report is ‘own initiative’, meaning it is not legislatively binding. I voted for this report because I welcome the report’s efforts to ensure that the more vulnerable people within society are not left behind, for example women and children. Although the report suggested that the death penalty and being on death row constituted torture (a legitimate form of punishment in countries like the United States) and although it called for extra funding for rehabilitation centres across Europe, I commend the report’s efforts to tackle the abhorrent practice of torture. National law agencies within the EU already have mechanisms in place to deal with this issue and if we want to eradicate it we must do so in the field. Therefore, I question the effectiveness of European-based rehabilitation centres. In my opinion on the eradication of torture (January 2014), I called for dialogue with third countries, the strong condemnation of all types of violence and criminalisation of FGM. I welcome this new report and voted in favour."@en1
