"I support this report analysing strategies for growth in the horticulture. Many great challenges face the sector, none more so than the decreasing consumption of fruit and vegetables across Europe. Any measures to improve production, increase innovation and boost the export of horticultural products are to be welcomed. I also welcome the Northern Ireland Department of Agriculture’s ‘Going for Growth’ strategy, launched in May 2013. The strategy makes a number of recommendations in relation to the local horticulture industry, including a review into how research for arable crops and production horticulture is prioritised and funded. The proposed Business Investment Scheme is another good initiative aimed at promoting innovative technologies, so it is a shame that it will have to rise above politicking over Pillar II payments. The report makes reference to Producer Organisations (PO), and this is an area where we can certainly improve in Northern Ireland, with only one successful PO in the mushroom sector to date. I would urge local authorities to examine the recommendations of the report into how we can make better use of POs. There remains more to be done to boost the horticulture sector, I hope this report represents the beginning of this work."@en1
