"As the Conservative Spokesman on Transport, I am supportive of moves that ensure all vehicles travelling in the EU are safe, but wanted to ensure from the outset that we did not end up with a ‘one size fits all’ approach to vehicle testing that would be detrimental to the tried and tested system in place in the UK. I repeatedly raised concerns at key elements of this proposal that would have seen the 23[nbsp ]000 garages which incorporate MOT testing facilities across the UK threatened with closure. The UK operates one of the most robust vehicle testing regimes in Europe, and is acknowledged as having one of Europe’s safest road networks. Furthermore, I am glad to see that the testing of caravans, classic cars, motorcycles and agricultural tractors has rightly been left to the competence of Member States. This would have been nothing more than a burdensome cost of people’s leisure time. Following the outcome of negotiations between the Parliament, Member States and the Commission, I am satisfied that the contentious issues that I have raised have been addressed."@en1
