"Money laundering has an estimated turnover of EUR[nbsp ]600bn and is connected with terrorism, drug and human trafficking; it also costs EU economies in lost tax revenue every year. As an international business, money laundering and the criminals involved operate across borders, so only coordinated action at EU level can be really effective at tackling the problem. I therefore voted in favour of this report, which will update EU law on money laundering to take account of evolving threats. The report includes enhanced transparency measures, such as a public register of company owners to make it harder for criminals to hide illicit money behind obscure, corporate structures. The scope of existing legislation will also be extended to include the gambling industry and the report includes strengthened protection for whistle blowers."@en1
