"Mr President, the Schengen Area may be of benefit to its participants. However, as a Member for London in the United Kingdom, I was reminded of the value of our non-participation when reading certain parts of the report. It notes that a policy of full visa reciprocity should be pursued and, of course, I generally support this idea from an EU perspective, in as much as we should under no circumstances offer visa-free travel to third countries of similar per capita income that do not offer the same guarantee.
This should not, however, dissuade the EU from seeking advantageous agreements with third countries, particularly in cases where there is a large disparity in the migratory push and pull factors between the third country and the Union. But we cannot ignore the economic realities and benefits that would be brought to both parties in such a circumstance.
Finally, as a longstanding friend of Ukraine, Armenia and Georgia, I would like to add my support to the visa facilitation direction of travel policy that is being pursued for the Eastern Neighbourhood. But we have to be very careful on a matter which is incredibly sensitive and my country, for the time being, remains out of the Schengen Area."@en1
