"2014 marks the centenary year of the outbreak of the First World War in Europe; 21 years later came the Second World War. In the aftermath of these events, the founding values and principles of the EU were born. To accede to the EU, a country within Europe must show that it adheres to Article 6 of the Treaty on the EU which states: ‘The Union is founded on the principles of liberty, democracy, respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms, and the rule of law, principles which are common to the Member States.’ Over the years, the concept of fundamental rights and freedoms has developed further. British Conservatives fully support the concept and, in doing so support the rights of the child; we support the need to combat discrimination in all its forms; we condemn violence against women, racist, anti-Semitic, homophobic and Xenophobic violence. We are, however, unable to support this report in its entirety. Primarily, this is because this Parliament cannot and should not act as judge and jury when a particular political faction here objects to the national laws in one of our Member States. We are a political House, not a courtroom."@en1
