"Mr[nbsp ]President, I voted against this report on the situation of fundamental rights in the EU, because of a number of issues that call into question Member States’ independence. A key feature of the Copenhagen criteria is respect for human rights, yet this report seems to suggest that certain Member States are failing in this area. The proposals for a ‘freezing procedure’ also seem to imply that national judicial systems cannot be trusted when judging certain cases. It is unacceptable to suggest that, if deemed necessary in certain cases, even interference in national parliaments is an appropriate action by the EU.
I have frequently spoken out against the one-size-fits-all model, and unfortunately this report is attempting to impose a top-down model on all Member States. Judicial systems cannot be fully harmonised and judicial matters should, generally and wherever possible, fall within the competence of individual Member States."@en1
