"I have been campaigning on tobacco for several years and was pleased to support this report, which aims to cut smoking rates across the EU by making it harder for tobacco companies to target children. Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in Europe, and with the majority of smokers starting before the age of 18, it is clear that we must stop tobacco companies recruiting a new generation of smokers. Measures in the report include a ban on flavoured cigarettes and tobacco, a ban on perfume and lipstick-style packets for cigarettes, and standardisation of the size and shape of packets, including a ban on mini-packets of 10 cigarettes. In addition, 65[nbsp ]% graphic health warnings will cover the front and back of packs. I would have liked to see the report go further in this area and introduce completely standardised packaging, but I am pleased that the Member States will be allowed to choose to do this and hope the UK government will stick to its commitment to bring in standardised packaging in the UK."@en1
