"Throughout the revision of the Tobacco Products Directive, my approach has been consistent and balanced. Protecting young people from the dangers of smoking is vital. For this reason, I strongly support, and now welcome, many measures included within the package, including more prominent health warnings on packs and a ban on products imitating cigarettes. The ill-effects of smoking are undeniable and I am pleased that this revision tackles many of the determining factors. We now need education as well as legislation. However, I have also been committed to ensuring that changes in manufacturing are proportionate to preserving local jobs in the industry in my constituency, Northern Ireland. And I have voted against the Directive on this basis alone. Over recent months, I have worked tirelessly to protect the 200-300 jobs at JTI Ballymena that are now under threat as a result of the 30g minimum weight set for packs of roll-your-own tobacco. Parliament previously democratically endorsed a 20g limit; however this decision was usurped at late-night trilogue negotiations last year. Regrettably, this provision will make hundreds of people redundant, bringing severe hardship to families and the local economy in Northern Ireland."@en1
