"While I support the need to reduce administrative barriers to cross-border EU trade, I believe this proposal for a Common European Sales Law would simply add a new layer of legal tightropes for traders. In my constituency, Northern Ireland, 98% of businesses are SMEs, and of course, this Parliament should be looking at ways of reducing operational burdens and allowing them to successfully enter markets in other parts of Europe. And to achieve this, there must be a focus on removing language obstacles, improving resolution of disputes and improving delivery. However, we do not need new laws to do this. We need improved implementation of existing legislation and a reduction in stifling red tape. This proposal would be highly confusing for traders given that existing national contract laws in each of the 28 Member States would remain active. They would simply be subject to a legal lucky dip. I also feel that harmonisation of this sales law would simply reinforce the Commission’s agenda of full-scale integration of contract law in other areas of national economic policy. This is unacceptable. Our legal traditions must be respected, and I trust that Parliament will resolve to reject this intrusion."@en1
