"Mr[nbsp ]President, I was intrigued by the title of this report: ‘Specific actions in the Common Fisheries Policy for developing the role of women’. My first reaction was that surely this was not necessary in the European Union in the year 2014 but, having read the report and listened to the debate, I recognise that it is necessary and very badly needed, and therefore I compliment those who have brought the issue to our attention today.
As the rapporteur pointed out, 100[nbsp ]000 women work in the fisheries sector, often doing back-breaking jobs like working nets, picking shellfish and other jobs in aquaculture, and there is no proper structure to afford them recognition. The situation is appalling in this day and age, and the measures proposed should be implemented as soon as possible – to provide statistics, to provide training, to provide backup and to provide moral support and recognition. These things are absolutely vital, and I compliment those who have brought the topic forward. Hopefully we will not have to debate it again."@en1
