"The Conservative delegation acknowledges that the politics of prostitution are extremely sensitive and we are mindful of the harrowing statistics which link human trafficking to sexual exploitation and prostitution. The Conservative delegation has co-authored an alternative motion which makes four key points: 1) the issue of criminalising is a Member State competency; 2) human trafficking is a root cause of prostitution and must be dealt with; 3) child prostitution must be eradicated and is unacceptable; 4) where a woman wishes to stop work as a prostitute, measures must be in place to help her. The Conservative delegation abstained on the Honeyball report because we do not think it is the role of the EU to be regulating prostitution. Where trafficking is taking place to fuel prostitution, then that must be addressed. However, whatever the view on prostitution, it is not the place of the EU to tell women what they can and cannot do with their bodies. The evidence on the success of the ʻSwedish Modelʼ is still disputed – there is data to show that the Swedish system has driven prostitution underground, endangering the safety of prostitutes; on the other hand, there is evidence to suggest a fall in demand."@en1
