"I welcome the adoption of the Parliament’s position on the interoperability of the rail system within the EU. Further standardisation and interoperability of rolling stock should ensure greater economies of scale for future investment in the Irish rail network. Greater oversight by the European Railway Agency of railway safety must aim to continually improve the good safety record of railways across Europe. In seeking to reduce the over 10[nbsp ]000 existing national authorisation procedures, we must also take account of the small size and the specificities of the Irish rail network, given our lack of connections with the continental rail network. For this reason, I very much welcome the adoption of Amendment 102, which provides greater scope and flexibility for Member States like Ireland with more isolated rail networks and which would allow for specific cooperation between the European Rail Agency and the two national safety authorities operating on the island of Ireland. I would urge the Council to now work with MEPs to reach a final agreement on this proposal."@en1
