"Mr President, first of all I would like to commend Ms Sehnalová’s long-standing efforts to make the eCall system a reality on Europe’s roads. In the Irish context, we have seen an increase in road deaths, breaking a positive downward trend for the first time since 2005. The Chairman of the Road Safety Authority has linked the higher death toll to a lack of enforcement resources, on foot of budgetary cuts. While, when we look at recent years’ trends, fewer lives are lost in Ireland compared to the situation on our roads a decade ago, this recent reversal is worrying.
We need to see the legislative package approved, so that as of late 2015 all new car models will be fitted with the automatic emergency call system in case of serious accident. The automatic transmission of accurate location data, even if the driver and passengers are unconscious, means that emergency services can arrive at the scene up to 50% faster in rural areas. As a ‘dormant’ system that will only be activated to transmit information to the nearest emergency centres in case of serious collision or if manually triggered by the passengers, it will save lives, whilst safeguarding our citizens’ privacy."@en1
