"Mr President, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who have contributed to this debate and the report. In my constituency of Northern Ireland, we have the unique position of being the only part of the United Kingdom with a land border with another Member State, thus our designation as an isolated network is extremely important for our rail network. Our regional authorities have made provision for suitable liberalisation of domestic passenger transport services by rail; now we must improve our network.
The Department of Regional Development and the Minister in Northern Ireland have proposed a Belfast Transport Hub which consolidates and builds on improvements to the Cork-Dublin-Belfast-Stranraer railway axis which has helped to reduce passenger journey times between the island of Ireland, north and south, and the United Kingdom and the rest of Europe. This, I believe, is a very exciting project.
That said, there is a requirement to increase rail capacity further, to cope with the current and projected levels of traffic and to practically strengthen economic and social links with the rest of the European Union. I would urge the European Union to support any such development."@en1
