"Madam President, I voted in favour of the report on the Fund for European Aid to the Most Deprived because, at the very least, now the budget is maintained and not reduced, as the Commission would have had it.
But let us be clear about how unfortunately low a level that is compared to the scale of the problem. In 2011, 8.9[nbsp ]% of Europeans, around 44.5 million people, were severely materially deprived. That means the funding works out at just over EUR[nbsp ]11 per person per year. Meanwhile poverty across Europe is rising rapidly. According to Oxfam, an additional 25 million people could be at risk of poverty by 2025, bringing the total to 146 million. Oxfam also correctly points out the responsibility of austerity for that increase and it is clear that the EU is a driving force behind that. At the same time, of course, profits for major corporations are increasing.
This allows the most deprived some crumbs off the table. It is better than nothing, but much more is necessary and much more is possible. It means breaking with austerity, investment in public services and decent work."@en1
