"Madam President, I am pleased to see that we have voted to guarantee funding for the European Voluntary Humanitarian Aid Corps. As the MEP who spearheaded the campaign in Parliament to have 2011 designated the European Year of Volunteering (EYV), I am really pleased to see that the Voluntary Aid Corps can now take its place as a European volunteering initiative. Sometimes we speak in the EU of solidarity, but citizens do not always see our actions as solidarity; sometimes they see it more as self-interest. However, in this case, the Corps will ensure that the word ‘solidarity’ has real meaning. The success of the Year of Volunteering was not really down to Parliament or the Commission, although we played a role. It was because of the EYV Alliance, which was a network of voluntary organisations across the EU that continue to be active volunteers and to support volunteering. I am really pleased to see that their recommendations contained in the Policy Agenda on Volunteering in Europe (PAVE) have been taken into consideration in this report. I am also pleased to see that the Corps will complement existing national and international schemes, and that training will be given to volunteers."@en1
