"I have always supported Europol, and it has frequently demonstrated its value for the purpose of facilitating contact between different police forces. Modern-day crime rarely limits itself to national borders, and the Internet in particular can answer to no single nation state. Nevertheless, Europol has shown key deficiencies, particularly in the field of data protection and in its ill-defined relation to Interpol. In particular, I have in the last few months been working with the UK-based Fair Trials International to ascertain whether Europol may ever unwittingly facilitate arrests on political grounds, and how far data is secured when it circulates its own information to third parties. I am therefore happy to endorse this report, which goes some way towards strengthening the checks and balances on Europol as well as making it a more efficient agency. The report goes further than we would like on some matters and perhaps not far enough in others, but it is clear that we need to continue our work to strengthen this vital body, as well as to ensure that its data processing and protection is both well-coordinated and responsible."@en1
