"Madam President, organised crime groups operate without borders and, increasingly, they are acquiring assets in other Member States and in third countries. I believe that this directive is long overdue. I particularly welcome that the directive encourages Member States to promote the re-use of seized criminal assets for social purposes. I have long advocated for the proceeds of seized criminal assets to be reinvested back into the communities that have suffered as a result of crime. Criminal activity runs deep, and the actions of a few damage the lives of communities for generations. I welcome confirmation by the Minister for Justice in Ireland that Ireland will indeed opt into this directive and I have asked Minister Shatter to go one step further. I have urged the Minister to take up the provision for the possibility of confiscated property being reinvested into communities and I am asking him to ensure that, when the directive is transposed into Irish law, a percentage of the funds from confiscated assets be ring-fenced for damaged communities."@en1
