"I welcome this proposal regarding trademarks, which is accompanied by another welcome proposal to approximate Member Statesʼ laws relating to trademarks. Although the rules at EU level relating to trademarks which were enacted in the 1990s have been a great success, it is unfortunate that there have been no significant changes until now to keep pace with technological developments, as well as developments in business practice. This Regulation has been welcomed by stakeholders. It is essential for Irelandʼs export oriented business sector that there is a consistent regulatory framework on trademarks across the European Union which is simpler, more reliable and predictable, cheaper and more efficient. This Regulation ensures that Irish businesses, as well as the 20 million other businesses in the European Union, can prosper from their intellectual property rights without undue expense or overly burdensome administration. I voted against amendments from the two largest political groups relating to counterfeit goods, which go against the balanced approach which was unanimously agreed upon at the committee stage. The original provisions sought to protect the free transit of generic medicines to developing countries."@en1
