"The situation in Syria is dire. In the past five days, around 73 children have been killed in Aleppo. It has been estimated that, since 2011, 10 000 children have been killed in the civil war.
More must be done to alleviate the suffering of the citizens of Syria, and the regime must respect human rights and chemical weapons deadlines.
The treatment of children has been abhorrent. There have been numerous reports of abuse in prisons, with children incarcerated alongside adults. Sexual abuse committed by the regime is widespread, including mutilation and rape. The world cannot stand idly and let this happen. The peace talks in Geneva need to progress, and both sides need to address human rights abuses. The Free Syrian Army has been training children to man military checkpoints and has put them in the line of fire. While most atrocities have been committed by the regime, the rebels are guilty too.
Just as worryingly, chemical weapons shipments have been delayed and have come under attack. The Syrian regime is failing in its obligation to hand over weapons. We must ensure that progress does not grind to halt; we must ensure that aid reaches citizens."@en1
