"I want to see clear EU country-of-origin labelling rules for all fresh, chilled or frozen pig, sheep and goat meat and poultry sold throughout Europe. Consumers deserve to know where animals were born, reared and slaughtered, whether they come from places with good welfare standards and how, and how far, they were transported. We have already introduced these rules for beef, without any upward effect on prices, and there is no reason why we should not have the same rules for pigs, sheep, chickens etc.
Up to 90% of consumers across Europe want to know where their meat comes from. They deserve the full picture, not just partial information such as the place of rearing and slaughter. Making country-of-origin rules mandatory for all unprocessed meat, and for processed meats such as beef in lasagne and chicken in curries, would encourage manufacturers to get a better grip on their supply chain and avoid the type of scandal we saw last year in relation to horsemeat. It would also ensure better protection for workers in the food-processing sector throughout Europe. The USA has already introduced comprehensive labelling. Europe should do likewise."@en1
