"This report sets out the European Parliament’s position on a framework for climate and energy policies for the period 2020-2030. I supported the report as it is clear we need to take action to reduce emissions and prevent climate change, while maintaining our energy security. With the aim of limiting global warming to below 2°C, the EU needs to achieve an emissions reduction target of 80% below 1990 levels. Labour MEPs and our Socialist colleagues called for an ambitious report with binding targets for emissions reduction, renewables and energy efficiency. The report also calls for energy prices to be affordable and transparent. In order to ensure we have a sustainable and balanced energy mix, I believe we need to send a clear signal for investment in renewable and low-carbon technology, which may include carbon capture and storage, nuclear and possibly shale gas, provided that the necessary safety provisions are in place."@en1
