"Madam President, thank you for allowing me to take the floor late, and my apologies to all of those who participated in the debate. There are just two points I want to make. In Ireland, there is huge interest in the inland waterway sector and in the idea of it both as an enterprising industry and also as a tourist attraction. There is a great need to fund local communities which want to redevelop walkways and pathways associated with inland waters. That is one key point in this debate. Secondly, it would be remiss of me today – having come from Ireland – not to mention my concern about Ireland. We have had terrible rainfall there. The river Shannon has been mentioned, and we are concerned today that there will be incredible flooding because of the tremendous rain. My thoughts are with the citizens in Ireland, particularly because of the difficult weather they have experienced. We will be calling on the Commission to take account of this and to provide as much support as possible to a weather-stricken country."@en1
