"Madam President, the use of canals in the UK for transporting goods has almost died out, with the exception – of course – of the Manchester Ship Canal. Today, our waterways are mainly used for leisure. I am always defending regional, national and European freight transport strategies that encourage a modal shift from road to more sustainable modes of transport, such as rail and inland waterways. Clearly, the NAIADES II Package has not delivered on that so far. Given the name of this strategy ‘Making better use of Europe’s waterways’, I would also like to ask the European Commission: what is its action plan to improve the connection between waterways that are mainly used for leisure and tourism and their connections to other forms of transport, as well as to ensure that these waterways are also used in the most environmentally friendly way?"@en1
