"I voted in favour of this report, which will further strengthen air passengers’ rights when flying within the EU. EU citizens already benefit from some of the best passenger rights in the world, such as compensation if they are denied boarding or their flight is delayed, but airlines have routinely exploited loopholes in the legislation and currently only around 2% of passengers receive compensation when they are entitled to it. These revised rules aim to improve enforcement, clarify grey areas and introduce some new rights. For example, the legislation provides a much clearer definition of when an airline is considered responsible for a delay or cancellation, and specifies that a ‘technical fault’ cannot be a valid reason to not pay out. Passengers will also be entitled to compensation if their flight is delayed by more than 3 hours, not just if it is cancelled. Today’s vote confirms that MEPs are ready to stand up for EU consumers in the face of airlines which have failed to guarantee their rights."@en1
