"The reasons that the British Conservative Delegation voted against this report concerned the issue of the status of Gibraltar. First, while we welcomed the deletion of the reference to the 1987 Joint Declaration (amendment 174), we believed that this regrettably did not go far enough. In 2006 the Governments of the United Kingdom, the Kingdom of Spain and Gibraltar concluded the Cordoba Agreement, ensuring that Gibraltar and its airport were part of the single market in aviation. Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory and part of the European Union. She is represented here in the European Parliament by three of my Conservative colleagues from the south-west of England. However, my amendment 171 included a reference to the ‘2006 Cordoba Agreement’ (signed by all parties) which was regrettably defeated. The whole point of submitting this amendment, twice, in both the Transport Committee and this Plenary, concerned the Spanish Governments refusal to abide by this agreement, frequently asserting that it is not valid. We believe this is solely for political reasons and this has led to huge problems taking place at the Gibraltar/Spanish border, more often than not affecting both Gibraltarian and Spanish citizens. This behaviour is discriminatory and wholly unacceptable."@en1
