"Heavy rains and floods have besieged the UK over the last month. Southern parts of the UK have had their wettest January since records began more than 100 years ago. It is expected that the cost for damages will run into hundreds of millions of pounds. However, there is no amount of money that can compensate for the hardship people have had to endure during this period. My thoughts are with these families. Member states face different natural disasters, for example parts of Southern Europe are known for wildfires. Each Member State must estimate what the biggest natural or man-made dangers they face are, and then decide for themselves on how to prevent and minimise dangers. Insurance packages must be fit for purpose. It is vital that individuals and companies are able to make well-informed choices when buying or providing local insurance packages. I voted in favour of this report as it rightly respects proportionality, and calls for insurance to remain a competence of the individual Member States."@en1
